The cones of most shuttlecocks are made cork while the skirts are mainly goose feather (hence the slang term birdie). However, some models are made of plastic, nylon or rubber with plastic or nylon skirts. Feathered shuttlecocks are used by serious players and in competition they are more likely to break than the other models. Because of the aerodynamic shape of the object, a shuttlecock will always fly and remain in the head first position no matter where it is struck. Plastic ones are generally used by casual players. Shuttlecocks are often called birds, birdies or shuttles and come in various materials and colors, including neon.
