You can play a game of basketball by just using the rim and not the netting, but it's not as much fun watching your shot from half court sink into a net-less hoop. There are permanent nets and replaceable nets available. Permanent nets are usually found outdoors in school playgrounds etc. They are made of chain; vinyl coated steel aircraft cable or a similar heavy duty material enabling them to last for years. These nets do not rot or fray like nylon nets, but chain nets often rust over time. There are heavy duty, weather resistant, replaceable nylon nets for indoor and outdoor use and these come in various weights and designs.
