While it's important the shaft of your cue is the proper size and weight you mustn't forget to have a good tip, since this is where you strike the ball and place the spin on it. Tips came into use in the early 1800s and are now made of leather or synthetic material. Layered laminated tips are often used, as each layer has a unique property to give the tip its striking characteristics. Harder layers are placed in the bottom of the tip for striking accuracy while softer layers are at the top to get a good grip on the ball. Some tips are designed for specific shots and can be glued, slipped or screwed on the cue. Accessories such as cement/glue, sanders, repair kits and clamps are available to help you change your tips. Tips come in various sizes, materials and colors.
