Headgear is a vital piece of equipment for a boxer. Amateur boxers must wear it during competition and most professionals will wear it all of the time, during sparring sessions. The headgear fits over your head and is made of padded foam designed to absorb the shock and cushion the impact of heavy and constant punches. Make sure your headgear is water resistant and adjustable, so it fits properly, as you need maximum vision and don't want it moving around on your head when you are hit by a punch. It should be lightweight and breathable to keep you cool during a bout. Most headgear is made of vinyl or leather and it should fully cover your ears, jaw, temples, cheeks, chin and forehead. Make sure your headgear is approved by the boxing organization you will be fighting for. Headgear comes in various materials, styles, sizes and colors. Some types of headgear come with face shields as well.
