All About Life Jacket, Vests, & PFD's

It doesn't matter how good a boater or swimmer you may be, you should always have a life jacket for each person in the canoe in case it capsizes. About 80 percent of all boating deaths occur by drowning. Make sure your jacket is easy to see, isn't too heavy and fits properly, allowing you to move freely. If it's too big it may slip off, so make sure you try it on before buying. A good life jacket should have a whistle and a light attached to it. Water logging or compression can cause life jackets to lose buoyancy, which makes them unusable so make sure you test and inspect them a couple of times a year. Life jackets come in various materials, sizes, styles and colors. You can even get jackets for pets. Be sure to check all government regulations regarding life jackets before going canoeing and kayaking.
