All About Fencing Weapons

There are basically three types of fencing weapons, the foil, epee and sabre. The foil is a modern version of a rapier. It is about 35 inches long and weighs less than a pound. A foil is a point weapon, meaning to score a valid touch you must connect with the point of the blade. The epee is a modern version of a dueling sword. It’s also a point weapon, but with a stiffer blade, a larger bell guard and it is heavier than a foil, as it weighs about 1.75 lbs. The sabre is a modern version of a cavalry sword and is close to a foil in length and weight. A sabre is a point and a slashing or a cutting weapon; meaning the side of the blade can also make a valid hit. Make sure your weapons feel good in your hand and you can get a good grip on it. You can purchase guards, pads and grips for your weapons.
