Field hockey goalies use their feet to kick and stop the ball, so they need protective equipment. The goalies usually attach pads over their footwear called kickers. Kickers are strapped over the boots and are generally made of foam or leather. Square toed kickers are leather pads with a metal plate in the front to protect toes. Foam padded kickers offer more protection and shock absorbency. It's important to have a good pair of kickers because if a goaltender feels the ball, every time he or she makes a save, they'll eventually become hesitant in going for the ball.
