Fishing line comes in various strengths, called pound-test. A ten pound-test line is stronger than six pound-test. You need to match the line to the size of rod and reel, the bait you're using, and the fish you are fishing for. Small casting and spinning reels can use up to six pound-test lines whereas larger reels can use stronger line. If you use a heavier line than needed it may affect your luck as it is more visible in water. Make sure you buy a strong, tested and durable line that is suited to the body of water you are fishing in, as heavily weeded and rocky areas need stronger line.
