All About Footballs
Footballs are often referred to as pigskins, but they are actually made out of premium cowhide leather. Years ago many sports balls were made of inflated animal bladders, thus the term pigskin. There are also rubber versions made for children. Whatever type of ball you are using, it should be made out of water repellant material for durability. Many balls have a built-in tacky material to allow for better grip. The ball should also retain its shape and retain its air during use. Balls generally weigh about 14 ounces to 15 ounces and have a long axis of 11 -11 ¼ inches and a circumference of 28-28 ½ inches. The balls used in the NCAA are a little bit smaller than those used in the NFL.
