There are literally dozens of types of golf balls to choose from and it may take you a while before you find the best one for you. Golf balls were originally smooth, but are now dimpled because dimples maximize lift and minimize drag. The golf ball has evolved over the years. The first golf balls were made of wood, leather and feather. Then a rubber-type ball was used. Mercury, metal, cork and compressed air cores were played and in 1972, the first two piece ball was introduced. There are now a variety of balls to suit the individual game and circumstance, as some offer control, others offer distance and some are suitable for practice only. The only way to find your favorite golf ball is to experiment with a few.
