The origin of gymnastics dates back to ancient Egypt, over 7,000 years ago, when acrobats used to vault over the backs of bulls. The name gymnastics comes from gymnos, which is the Greek word for naked. In ancient Greece, male athletes used to train and compete in the nude. Things have evolved over the years as athletes are now fully clothed and gymnastics is a popular Olympic event that is enjoyed by men and women around the world. There are various sporting events that make up gymnastics and these include the high bar, parallel bars, rings, pommel horse, vault, floor exercises, trampoline, rhythmic gymnastics, uneven parallel bars and balance beam. You need good strength balance and agility to participate in gymnastics and it’s a sport people usually enjoy in a club atmosphere as gymnastic clubs supply all of the equipment needed. All you really need to take are your clothes and shoes, so it’s a relatively inexpensive sport to compete in.
