Grips or hand guards are worn by gymnasts on a bar related apparatus. They consist of a leather strip and a Velcro or buckled wrist strap. The leather strip is approximately five centimeters across and have finger holes at the top. The holes should go down to the first knuckle; however, the number of holes depends on the apparatus. On men’s high bars and women’s uneven parallel bars the grips should only go over the middle and ring fingers, but on men's rings they need to go over the index finger as well. Wrist guards are usually worn under grips. Some people prefer to make their own grips out of sports tape. Water and chalk are also good to use in various bar apparatus routines to help with sticking to the bar.
