Horseshoes is played with specially manufactured equipment and official horseshoes need to be sanctioned and approved by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association of America (NHPA). There are no minimum standards, but a horseshoe can’t weigh more than 2 pounds, 10 ounces or be larger than 7-1/4 inches in width, 7-5/8 inches in length and, on a parallel line 3/4 inch from a straight edge touching the points of the shoe. The opening of the shoe can’t exceed 3-1/2 inches. However, a 1/8 to 3-5/8 inch tolerance is permitable on used shoes. No part of the shoe can exceed one inch in height. Rubber, plastic and foam horseshoes are also available to play with.
