Ice climbing is an outdoor winter sport that could be compared to mountain climbing and rock climbing. However, it actually consists of climbing frozen waterfalls. Some people may consider it to be an extreme sport because it is extremely dangerous and you really have to know what you are doing before you try it. Ice climbing began as a sport in the U.S. in the late 1960's. Since then it has evolved and increased in popularity mainly because of significant innovations in ice climbing equipment. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be a body builder to enjoy ice climbing. To be a good ice climber you have to have excellent balance and focus along with an efficient technique. When it is done well, ice climbing feels and looks like a vertical dance. It is greatly recommended that you take an ice climbing instruction course before attempting this sport and to find out exactly what equipment is needed.
