Inline skating became popular around the world in the early 1990s, especially with young men and women, but suffered a drop in popularity in the mid 90s. It did, however become popular with adults as a fitness activity. It's basically a variation of roller skating and people enjoy it for fun, recreation, fitness, transportation and for competition. Skating races are popular, as well as artistic and dance events, along with inline hockey, soccer and basketball. Inline skating is relatively inexpensive as you only need a pair of skates to enjoy it, but it's a good idea to wear protective equipment and a helmet at all times, especially when playing hockey.
