Early versions of petanque balls were made of coconuts and wood, but now they are always made of metal and are hollow inside. Because of this, they can last indefinitely. They measure between 70.5 mm to 80 mm in diameter, about the size of an orange, and weigh between 650grams to 800grams depending on whether you are playing for fun or in regulated competitions. The cochonnet, or jack, is generally made of wood or composite material and measures between 25mm to 35mm in diameter. Before buying your own boule, a good idea would be to try different sized and weighted balls at your local club to see what you are comfortable with.
