Powerlifting belts are often the subject of debates since some experts say they are harmful and others say they are beneficial to lifters. The sport does put a lot of strain on your back and a belt can be worn to help support the fragile area of the lower back. Belts usually come in either four inch or six inch thickness’ and are generally made of leather or nylon. Belts should only be worn for very strenuous lifting, as it’s believed they can actually weaken your back if you wear one all the time. They are designed to support the lumbar region and you should really consult a professional trainer or a doctor to make sure your belt is helping you.
