Unless you’re competing in bareback events, you are going to need a nice comfortable saddle for you and your horse. When choosing a saddle make sure you fit it to the horse and don’t fit the horse to the saddle. It’s a good idea to try fitting a few before buying. However, the saddle should also fit you comfortably too. Choose a saddle that fits snugly over the horse's withers, shoulders and back without it digging into the horse. When your horse is saddled, slide your hand between the horse and the saddle pad and you should be able to move your fingers all the way around the saddle. Saddles are available in various materials, sizes, colors and styles.
