Although competitive rowers don't have to wear life jackets while racing, it's a good idea to wear them at all other times you are in a row boat. There are many types to choose from and you should get one that fits you properly and that is comfortable. If a life jacket is too loose it may slip over your head. Your life jacket should keep your head above water and be lightweight, so it doesn't weigh you down. It shouldn't restrict your movement and should be easily visible to others. A good life jacket should have a whistle and light attached to it. You should also take first aid and survival kits with you when rowing for pleasure, recreation, transportation or fishing.
