A rugby ball is similar to a football in shape and size, as both are oval and 11 inches long. The difference is the shape of the balls' end. A football's end tapers to a point, whereas a rugby ball has a flatter end. The ends of the balls make a marked difference in how they move through the air. Because of its flat end, a rugby ball has more drag and is more likely to tumble end-over-end. Rugby balls are inflatable and made out of four panels that are stitched together. They used to be made of leather, but are generally made of synthetic material now to allow it to keep its shape and to withstand the weather, as well as enabling you to get superior grip. A rugby ball is designed specifically for the game. Smaller balls are often used for younger players. Rubber training balls are also available.
