For sailboat racing you need proper clothing as it can be very cold and wet while competing. You should wear a wet suit or a dry suit. Dry suits are loose fitting and seal out water, so you and your clothes remain dry. The suit doesn't provide insulation as the clothes you wear under the suit will keep you warm. Be sure to wear enough warm clothing, but make sure it doesn't restrict you. Wet suits, on the other hand, won't keep you dry, but will keep you warm as they are made of waterproof, foam-rubber (neoprene), which insulates you even when wet. The thickness and snugness of the wet suit will determine on how warm it keeps you. A looser suit will be cooler and a tighter suit keeps you warmer, however, make sure it isn't too tight as it will inhibit your movement. You should also make sure to keep your head and hands warm while sailing.
