There are many different types of shooting events throughout the world and most are categorized by the type of gun used. There are shooting competitions for pistols, shotguns, air guns, rifles etc. The sport has grown in popularity and in the number of events. In the 1896 Olympic Games, there were three shooting events and today there are now 17. The Olympic biathlon combines cross country skiing with shooting. The sport generally involves shooting at a stationary or moving target, from a specific distance, and has basically been around as long as guns have. Because of the association of guns with crime, it hasn’t exactly been a well received sport in some areas, but it is one of the worlds most participated in sports. It’s definitely not for everybody. It is a relatively inexpensive sport once you have the guns, you only really need to keep on top of the ammunition.
