Snowshoeing was, and still is, a form of transportation over the snow, but it is also a form of sport since snowshoe races are often held in colder climate countries. Snowshoes work by distributing your weight over a larger area, so your feet don't sink into the snow. Older showshoes were made of hardwood frames with leather lacings. Many newer models are made of light metal or plastic. Snowshoes are usually raised at the toe for maneuverability. The shoes are no good if they accumulate snow, that’s why older models have holes in the lacing. It’s an inexpensive sport to enjoy as you only need a pair of snowshoes, but you definitely need some warm clothes and boots to go with them.
