Bases can be made out of anything if you are just playing for fun, but in league play you need properly secured bases or unsecured throw down bases. The bases should be easy to see and durable. Most throw down bases are made of rubber or a similar material and can easily be hosed off or washed. Home plates and pitchers' mounds also come in most sets of bases. Secured bases are usually anchored into the ground with metal spikes to make sure they don't budge when people run into them during play. They are usually made of foam interiors, which are then covered by rubber or nylon. Most organized leagues use a double first base for safety reasons; to cut down on collisions between runners and first basemen. Bases are made of various materials.
