You can't play softball without a glove. Well you can actually, but it's definitely easier and more fun to use one. A glove has fingers in it and a mitt doesn't, making mitts ideal for first basemen and catchers. Make sure it fits properly and protects your hand from shock when catching the ball. It's a good idea to break your leather glove/mitt in after buying it so it forms to your hand and loosens up. The best way to do this is play catch daily or use glove oil or cream, but make sure you check with the manufacturer on what products to use. Some gloves have straps to let you tighten or loosen the fit. Gloves come in various materials and sizes, but only in a few colors. Women's and children's gloves usually have narrower fingers and wrist openings for better fit. Children's gloves often have bigger pockets also to help them learn how to catch.
