It's not exactly clear when surfing originated, but it was developed in Hawaii, where it was popular during the 19th century. From there, it spread to California, in the 1920s, and became popular with American youth, in the 1960s. Surfers' lifestyles and regimens seem to be freer than those of other athletes and they form a unique sporting subculture. Surfing is also popular with men and women in many other Pacific nations where it is warm and the water is plenty. It's not a very expensive sport as a good board should last quite a while and clothing, if any, may consist of a wetsuit.
