Surfing is often called a culture or lifestyle instead of a sport, as its popularity exploded during the 1950s and 1960s. Surf fashion, surf music, surf movies and surf slang suddenly took over the west coast of America and some of it still exists today. While surf wear was worn on shore, the only thing you really need to wear while surfing is a bathing suit or a pair of board shorts, with or without a shirt. If the weather and water is cold, surfers often wear wetsuits for protection from the elements. So while surfing, feel free to wear anything you like as long as it doesn't hinder your surfing and it is comfortable.
