Tennis balls are generally made of a layer of rubber surrounding a hollow center and then covered in felt or other fabric. Balls designed for grass courts have different felt than those designed for asphalt or clay. Balls are usually inflated with nitrogen or air and some are presureless with solid rubber cores. A ball should be between 2 ½ inches and 2 5/8 inches in diameter and should weigh between 2 ounces and 2 1/16 ounces. Balls are usually designed for fast, medium, slow or high altitude play and should be numbered so you don't mix up the balls with adjacent courts. Since there are so many balls on the market the best thing to do is experiment with a few until you find one you like best. Foam practice balls and children's balls are also available. Tennis balls come in various materials and colors.
