There are basically three types of strings for tennis racquets, these are nylon, gut or synthetic gut. Nylon is durable and may be cheaper, but often loses tension and snaps. Gut strings hold tension better, but don't usually last as long as nylon. Synthetic strings may be the best way to go for casual players. Strings are sold in various thicknesses which are called gauges, with the larger number meaning the thinner the string. Thick strings are less resilient, but usually last longer. Thinner strings generally produce more spin, while softer strings usually produce less vibration. If possible, experiment with various strings and tensions to find out which ones suit you best.
