Triathlon shoes are similar to cycling shoes as they should have automatic binding clips that snap your feet to the bike's pedals. The shoes should be padded and comfortable enough to wear without socks, as you may not want to take the time to put any on after swimming. They should be lightweight and water resistant or have holes in the bottom to allow water to drain. Elastic laces are often used, but most people prefer laceless shoes because they take time to do up. Velcro straps are commonly used. Make sure your shoes are adequate for cycling and running, so you don't have to change them. There are no set rules, so use what you feel the most comfortable in and what you feel will save you the most time while in transition.
