All About Weightlifting Belts

Weightlifting belts come in various designs and sizes and you should do some research into their usefulness before purchasing one. Belts have two primary functions. One is to reduce stress on your lower back, while lifting in an upright position, and to prevent back hyperextension during overhead lifts. Belts reduce stress by compressing the contents of the abdominal cavity, which increases the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) providing you with more support in front of the bones of the lower back. Some belts have wide backs and narrow fronts, so it is a good idea to wear it backwards if increased IAP is desired. Belts should be worn tightly to be effective, but this is physically hard and shouldn’t be done for long periods of time since a tight belt during exercise can raise your blood pressure. Belts should only be used when doing maximal or submaximal lifts in exercises like the squat or deadlift; where the weight is supported by the lifter's back. Belts are also good for doing exercises like the military press, which may cause the back to hyperextend. Between sets, belts should be loosened to let blood pressure to return to normal.
