Windsurfing boards are lighter and stronger today and are mainly made of composite materials. Boards generally weigh between 15 pounds to 40 pounds and are usually between eight to 12.5 feet long. All boards have a fin underneath near the tail and a mast track for the mast. Most boards have foot straps for keeping on the board. Longboards are good for light-wind sailing and they are usually over 10 feet long. They also have a centerboard, which gives the board stability and upwind ability. Shortboards are under 10 feet long and don't use a centerboard. There are basically three styles of boards: formula boards used for racing, which are fast and powerful with large sails. Wave boards are for stunts and are short, technically demanding boards used for surfing in big waves. Freestyle boards are all around standard boards and good for beginners. You should try a few boards if possible and buy the type you are most comfortable with.
