All About Wrestling

If you’ve ever watched wrestling and seen guys getting hit over the head with chairs, guitars or two by fours, here’s news for you…you’re not watching the actual sport of wrestling. The world wide popular Olympic sport of wrestling consists of two unarmed opponents attempting to pin each others shoulders to the mat through the art of body grips, strength and swiftness. Wrestling is one of the most primitive and universal sports and likely originated in prehistoric times. Today, there are different styles of wrestling such as sumo and jujitsu. However, nearly all countries compete in Greco-Roman and freestyle; with freestyle being the most popular in the US and Europe. Freestyle wrestling allows tackling, tripping and leg holds. Wrestlers are classified by weight and earn points for specific moves. If there is no pin during the match the wrestler with the most points is declared the winner. Most wrestlers join clubs for the competition and it’s a relatively inexpensive sports as you don’t really need anything other than a uniform, head gear and knee pads.
